m802 Commander

Grace Design m802 Commander

The m802 Commander can be used to control from one to eight Grace Design m802 microphone preamplifiers from your computer, using MIDI. Designed in cooperation with Grace Design, the m802C can access the full gain range and every 1.5dB gain step, unlike the generic protools controller. It also displays "overs" that the preamp detects so that you don't have to look at the preamp to see clipping.

We have standalone versions available for both Mac and PC. You can download a demo version of either of these now, or, if you are ready to purchase one of them you can use our online store.  We use a reliable and simple challenge-response copy protection, and every application includes licenses for 2 machines.

m802 CScreen Image

This is a small image showing how the m802 screen appears (click here to enlarge.) Each channel has a gain control, phase button, and 48V phantom button. Also, there is a button to turn on and off the input selection for ribbon mic. If you switch a channel to Ribbon mode, then the 48V phantom power is also disabled.

Full Control

You have full control of every function that the m802 supports through its own remote: gain, phase reverse, phantom power on/off, and dpa mode. If you have the optional ADC module installed in your m802, you also have full control of this module.

Complete Monitoring

The m802 Commander program shows you the state of every parameter and setting on the m802. When the m802 is detected, status of every setting is sent to the program, so you can see at once every gain setting, phantom power setting, phase reverse and dpa mode. Also, if the ADC module is installed, you will see the current status of the digital module. And unlike the generic DAW mic preamp controllers, overs are latched and displayed until you clear them.

Control Multiple Preamps

The m802 Commander can control up to eight m802 preamps. By selecting the preamp that you want from a drop-down menu, the screen immediately changes to show the settings on that unit.

MIDI Setup

You can select the MIDI in and out ports from a menu that lists all of the MIDI ports that are installed on your computer. Once you select the MIDI ports, the Grace Design m802 is automatically detected and the preamp settings are read and the m802 software application screen is updated to match the preamp.

ADC Setup

You have full control of the m802 Analog / Digital Converter board, if installed. View and set the sample rate, lock source, format, and 1-wire or 2-wire mode. Also, the lock status is displayed.

Ribbon Card / 130V Card

The m802 may have a standard audio card installed on a channel, or it may have a 130V DPA microphone-type audio card installed. The type of card that is installed is detected and shown by the legend on the blue  button. The label will show rbn for a standard card (which is capable of going into ribbon mic mode), and dpa for a card that is capable of 130v phantom power.

Multiple Preamp Support

The m802 controller support up to eight m802 preamps, daisy-chained through MIDI. You select the preamp that you wish to control from a drop-down menu. The preamp is detected automatically, if present, and the channel numbers change to reflect the preamp selected.

Overload Display

Channel overloads are shown on the m802 Controller screen as they occur. Overloads are latched and can be cleared with a button.

Full Gain Range Control

The m802 Commander has access to the full gain range of the m802 preamp. Also, every gain step is available, so you can change the preamp in 1.5dB steps. The generic controllers only have access to 3dB steps, and they do not have access to the full gain range of the m802.

MIDI Over LAN Support

By running a utility program such as MIDI Over Lan, or MIDI Over Ip, you can control your m802 from any computer on a LAN using another computer on the same LAN. In this case, you only need to have the MIDI port at the m802. The MIDI commands get transmitted over the network, and then get translated to MIDI. The MIDI port at the computer that is near the m802 is connected to the m802(s) that are to be controlled.
